In the book “Em Movimento” the renowned brazilian professor Ângela Santos tells us about the history of many modern physiotherapy techniques, their introduction in Brazil and her experience applying these techniques in her clinical work. Because of the strong empirical aspect of the book I chose to design the book and create illustrations using digital watercolour resembling the way watercolour was used by XIX century scientists to keep notes in their field journals.
Although academic publishings focused on empirical work are not commonly seen in Brazil, they are an effective way for scholars to point out the practical aspects of one’s daily work. Therefore, the importance of the book’s images in order not only to demonstrate movements and anatomy, but to establish a connection with scientific field journals tradition.
Another important consideration is to illustrate the book to represent diversity of genders, colors and body types. This is something I look out to address in all my works, and that I find most critical when addressing professions or activities associated with specific genders, and skin colors. I believe that artists have a great responsibility here. A simple act of exchanging genders, bodies, the skin color or texture of a person working can be a powerful way to make us think about the society and world around us.
